The Origin of Satan: How Christians Demonized Jews, Pagans, and Heretics, by Elaine Pagels The title of this book seems somewhat misleading if all you see is, “The Origin of Satan.” The rest of the title is the real story. Even so, by the end of the book I had a renewed appreciation for that “origin” [...] -

I confess that I have often been a foolishly proud mystic. In the wizardry of my physical and intellectual prime, I believed that through my studies of psychology and philosophy, through my spiritual practices, and aided by the grace of God, I had left behind many ordinary human troubles, and so much of my own past. [...]

This will probably resonate with many of us. I think it is one of the hallmarks of mysticism, which may seem ironic given that the textbook definition of mysticism centers on knowing union with God.

Good stuff, Steve. Your point about “nondualism” is well taken. It seems that words become fashionable and then start to get all twisted up. For me, the oneness of all is a whole that does not exclude our perception of its multiplicity. It’s as impossible for me to conceive of spirit and matter as being, [...]

Helpful observations, Terence. There are indeed many Christians who have been taught that meditation opens the door for delusions and demons. I believe that this fear is at least partially based on meditation’s potential for two things: (1) deeper self-awareness, which leads to confronting the deep doubts, fears, and wounds that are often covered over [...]

Hi Karina, Yes, I’m also a fan of Pagels, and I’m not so sure her mysticism is very hidden.
In fact, I recall reading or hearing her state that she can reasonably be called a Gnostic, though stating it very carefully. In any case, across the body of her work she has done a [...] -

Beautiful reflections, Laurie. Thank you.
I have also experienced the unexplained appearance of a sweet scent on a few occasions. In one case, I and others with me clearly smelled jasmine in a place where there was no jasmine, in a season when jasmine would not have been blooming even if it were nearby, [...] -

Byron, It’s a myth that you have to be able to completely still and quiet your mind in order to meditate well. Just paying attention to how your mind is active is in itself good meditation. Also, some of the possibilities that are extolled as “ideal” by various authors are skills that have to be [...]

Hi Byron, Welcome! There are countless things that might be recommended to you. As a preface, I suggest you see if there is someone near you who could serve as a spiritual director in such things, someone who has experience in deep spiritual practice. You might start by looking for representatives of Contemplative Outreach or [...]

Yes, Steve, this is part of the challenge for all of us! In another venue this morning, some good friends and I had a very spirited conversation about intolerance of intolerance. It seems to me that the underlying problem is thinking in dichotomies, such as right and wrong, in which disagreement with my right view [...]
